About the Director

Coleman Francis — Coleman Francis shot this bleak desert oddity silent and laid all sound in afterward, including the infamous portentous voiceover. The result is a strange, near-experimental atomic-age artifact and Tor Johnson's final starring role.

Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story

A 1961 independent release whose US copyright was never renewed, placing it in the public domain; it is listed as public domain by veteran PD distributor Festival Films and circulates freely on legitimate PD platforms.

Behind the Scenes

Wrestler-actor Tor Johnson, an Ed Wood regular, headlines his last leading role here. Made with no live sound, the film's disjointed dubbing and grim narration have made it a touchstone of outsider cinema and bad-movie fandom.

Did You Know?

  • The entire film was shot without live sound; all dialogue and narration were dubbed in later.
  • It was the final starring role for ex-wrestler and Ed Wood veteran Tor Johnson.
  • Its cryptic opening narration is widely quoted by fans of cult cinema.

Reception & Legacy

Frequently named among the worst films ever made, it has become prized as accidental avant-garde for its eerie silence and fractured storytelling. A Mystery Science Theater 3000 favorite, it enjoys a durable cult following.
