About the Director

Roger Corman — Roger Corman conceived, financed, and shot this in roughly two months to exploit the Sputnik frenzy, reportedly promising Allied Artists a finished satellite picture in 90 days. It is a model of his rapid, resourceful exploitation filmmaking.

Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story

A 1958 Allied Artists release produced by Corman whose US copyright was not renewed; it has long been treated as public domain and circulates on major ad-supported services and PD catalogs.

Behind the Scenes

Rushed out to ride the international panic over the Soviet Sputnik launch, it gave Corman regular Dick Miller a rare leading role. It became a staple of public-domain TV and is now widely available on free streaming platforms.

Did You Know?

  • Corman pitched it as a 90-day rush job to cash in on the Sputnik launch.
  • It gave Corman regular Dick Miller one of his few leading-man roles.
  • Corman himself reportedly appears briefly as a technician in a control-room scene.

Reception & Legacy

Critics regard it as minor but energetic Corman, praising its speed and ambition over its budget-bound effects. It holds interest as a snapshot of Space Race anxiety and as a showcase for Dick Miller and Susan Cabot.
