About the Director
Bernard L. Kowalski — An early directing job for Bernard L. Kowalski, produced by Roger and Gene Corman on a shoestring. The talky, claustrophobic siege structure stretches a tiny budget and anticipates later "alien gestating in a human host" stories.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
An American International Pictures release whose US copyright was never renewed in its 28th year, allowing it to lapse into the public domain; it is catalogued as public domain by long-running PD distributor Festival Films.
Behind the Scenes
Shot in days for around 68,000 dollars and double-billed with She Gods of Shark Reef, it was the work of first-time screenwriter Martin Varno under the working title Creature from Galaxy 27. It became a syndication and public-domain regular.
Did You Know?
- The original working title was Creature from Galaxy 27.
- First-time screenwriter Martin Varno was just 21 when he wrote it.
- Its host-gestation premise predates and prefigures later "alien embryo" horror.
Reception & Legacy
Critics note its threadbare monster and static, dialogue-heavy stretches, yet credit it with a creepy premise ahead of its time. It is fondly regarded among Corman-era creature features and was later riffed on MST3K.
