About the Director
Dan Milner — Brothers Dan and Jack Milner produced this on a shoestring, with Dan directing. It rode out on a double bill with Day the World Ended, helping kick off the atomic-monster boom that American International would soon dominate.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
Registered for US copyright in 1955 by the Milners but never renewed in its 28th year, placing it in the public domain; it is not among the science-fiction titles Wade Williams later claimed and renewed.
Behind the Scenes
One of the earliest independent atomic-age monster features, it was released theatrically in December 1955. Its cheapness has made it a staple of public-domain compilations and late-night creature showcases ever since.
Did You Know?
- It opened on a double feature with Roger Corman's Day the World Ended.
- The "phantom" suit is widely mocked as one of the era's clumsiest rubber monster costumes.
- Leads Kent Taylor and Cathy Downs were fading studio-era contract players slumming in B sci-fi.
Reception & Legacy
Reviewers then and now rate it among the weakest atomic monster films, faulting its slow pace and risible creature. It survives largely as a time-capsule of mid-1950s nuclear anxiety and bargain-basement filmmaking.
