About the Director

Robert Stevenson — Robert Stevenson directs this earnest coming-of-age tale years before he became one of Walt Disney's most successful directors, later helming Mary Poppins. His sympathetic handling of the young cast and the school's moral world is already evident here.

Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story

Public domain in the United States. A US production released by RKO Radio Pictures, the film's copyright was not renewed and consequently lapsed into the public domain. Thomas Hughes's 1857 source novel is also long in the public domain.

Behind the Scenes

RKO's adaptation drew on a famous English literary classic and assembled a strong transatlantic cast. Though it lost money on first release, it endured through television and public-domain home video.
