Synopsis

Stanley Banks has only just recovered from the chaos of his daughter Kay's wedding when she and her husband Buckley deliver fresh news: a baby is on the way. While everyone else celebrates, Stanley broods that he is far too young and lively to be called Grandpa. As the months pass he frets over names, in-laws, and his shrinking place in his daughter's life. When he is finally entrusted with the infant for an afternoon in the park, a moment of distraction leads to a panic-stricken scramble. Vincente Minnelli's gentle sequel reunites the cast of Father of the Bride for another warmhearted comedy of suburban family life.

About the Director

Vincente Minnelli — Vincente Minnelli was one of MGM's most gifted directors, celebrated for musicals like An American in Paris and Meet Me in St. Louis as well as sophisticated comedies and dramas. Working again with Spencer Tracy after Father of the Bride, he brings an unfussy charm to this domestic follow-up, letting Tracy's exasperated narration carry the gentle humor.

Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story

Father's Little Dividend is in the public domain in the United States because MGM failed to renew its copyright registration in the required 28th year. That lapse caused the film to fall into the public domain, where it has remained since 1979.

Behind the Scenes

Rushed into production to capitalize on the surprise success of Father of the Bride (1950), the sequel reunited Spencer Tracy, Joan Bennett, and the young Elizabeth Taylor under producer Pandro S. Berman and director Vincente Minnelli. The result was a brisk, modestly scaled comedy that arrived in theaters less than a year after the original, with the same creative team and characters.

Did You Know?

  • It is a direct sequel to Father of the Bride (1950), made by the same star, director, and producer.

Reception & Legacy

The film was a popular success, drawing audiences eager to revisit the Banks family, and reviewers found it an agreeable if lighter companion to its predecessor. Today it is valued as a charming time capsule of postwar American family comedy and as a showcase for the easy chemistry between Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor.
