Synopsis
A modest but engaging B-feature from James Whale, Sinners in Paradise tosses senators, a nurse, a gangster, and assorted strangers onto a Pacific island after a crash. The island's mysterious sole resident slowly thaws as the castaways form a working community. It blends class-conscious comedy with romance and adventure.

About the Director
James Whale — James Whale, far from his famous horror films, handled this Universal B-unit picture with brisk economy, drawing light comedy and warmth from the ensemble of stranded misfits.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
The film entered the US public domain in 1966 because the copyright claimants failed to renew the registration in the 28th year after its 1938 publication. The non-renewal applies to the Universal film.
Behind the Scenes
Sinners in Paradise was a B-unit production from the later, less celebrated phase of Whale's Universal career, in the tradition of class-conscious desert-island stories.
