Synopsis
Fresh from two years in the Army, Andy Hardy returns to Carvel and enrolls at Wainwright College, determined to finish his law studies and marry Kay Wilson, the girl he left behind. But love refuses to cooperate. A misjudged blind date, an embarrassing turn escorting a six-foot model to the freshman dance in front of his visiting parents, and a sudden reversal in Kay's feelings send Andy's romantic plans tumbling into comic disaster. As always, it falls to the patient Judge Hardy to steer his son through heartbreak with one of their famous father-and-son talks. It was the last appearance of the beloved Hardy family for twelve years.

About the Director
Willis Goldbeck — Willis Goldbeck was a longtime MGM writer and producer who moved into directing in the mid-1940s; he is best known for later co-writing the John Ford western The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Here he takes the reins of one of the studio's most reliable franchises, keeping the wholesome small-town comedy moving while giving the returning Mickey Rooney room to do his trademark flustered teenage panic.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
Love Laughs at Andy Hardy is in the public domain in the United States because MGM failed to renew its copyright registration in the required 28th year. That lapse caused the film to enter the public domain, where it has remained since 1974.
Behind the Scenes
The film marked Mickey Rooney's return to the role of Andy Hardy after his own wartime service in the Army, and it was the fifteenth and penultimate entry in the long-running series that had been a cornerstone of MGM's output since the late 1930s. The studio reunited the familiar Hardy household, including Lewis Stone as Judge Hardy, Fay Holden as Mrs. Hardy, and Sara Haden as Aunt Milly, for another slice of Carvel life.

Reception & Legacy

Though the series was winding down, Love Laughs at Andy Hardy endures as a nostalgic emblem of MGM's idealized small-town America.
