About the Director
Jean Yarbrough — Jean Yarbrough keeps the mood swinging between fog-bound dread and comic panic, leaning on Mantan Moreland's impeccable timing. The balance of voodoo atmosphere and laughs makes it play more as horror-comedy than straight terror.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
The film is in the public domain in the United States because Monogram Pictures failed to renew its original 1941 copyright after the first 28-year term, so federal protection lapsed and the film passed into the public domain.
Behind the Scenes
Bela Lugosi was originally sought for the villainous doctor but was unavailable, and Henry Victor stepped in. The film was popular enough to spawn a 1943 follow-up, Revenge of the Zombies, again featuring Mantan Moreland.

Reception & Legacy
