Synopsis
Reissued as The Scar, this is a top-tier B-noir produced by and starring Paul Henreid in a dual role. Gambler John Müller impersonates a look-alike doctor after a casino heist goes wrong, but a reversed photograph plants the seeds of his undoing. John Alton's celebrated cinematography makes it look like a far more expensive film.

About the Director
Steve Sekely — Credited to Steve Sekely, though Henreid (also the producer) reportedly directed portions himself. The film's fatalistic irony and shadow work place it among the most admired Eagle-Lion noirs.
Why It’s Free: The Public-Domain Story
Public domain by copyright non-renewal. The Eagle-Lion release was not renewed after its initial 28-year term and is a long-documented US public-domain noir; as a domestic production no URAA restoration applies.
Behind the Scenes
Based on Murray Forbes's 1946 novel and shot by master cinematographer John Alton. Henreid set the project up at the newly formed Eagle-Lion to escape his Warner Bros. romantic typecasting.
Did You Know?
- Paul Henreid plays both the killer and his victim, the doctor with the facial scar.
- A young Jack Webb appears in an uncredited bit.
- The plot hinges on a photo negative printed in reverse, putting Müller's self-inflicted scar on the wrong side of his face.
Reception & Legacy
The New York Times judged it "an adequate examination of an intelligent criminal type," and later critics rank it highly for Alton's photography and its bleak, downbeat ending.
