‘Life Imprisonment‘ or ‘Death Sentence‘ are in itself hostile in nature. No doubt the people who commits such aggressive crimes should be punished. But isn’t it the duty of the court to unveil the case to depth? What if an innocent is punished? Isn’t crime getting doubled? The upcoming film “Dhananjoy”, directed by Arindam Sil, is a human document involving the investigation on the rape-murder case of ‘Hetal Parekh’ in the year 1990. Did both the victim and the accused get justice? Or was it a double crime? The film is based on a true incident – a fourteen-year girl was raped and then murdered. On 14th August 2004, the accused was sentenced to death. For the people it was a moment when the public got their trust back in the system. But the despised soul cried for justice.
Dhananjoy Chatterjee, till date, remains the only ‘non-terrorist criminal‘ to be awarded the capital punishment in the 21st century.
Arindam Sil has given us “Durga Sohay” a few days back but that didn’t work out too well. The trailer of ‘Dhananjoy‘ has already got a huge response, may be because of its controversial topic. But Arindam has once told that his intention is to make the government reopen the case. Anirban Bhattacharaya, who has also played several other roles in Arindam’s earlier films, is playing the Dhananjoy’s role He was found living the character before the shoot started. The others cast members include Mimi Chakraborty, Kanchan Mullick, Kaushik Sen and Paran Bandhopadhyay. Kanchan Mullick, a famous comedian is given a diverse (public prosecutor) role to play. He too had several sessions with a prosecutor lawyer before the shoot. It also raises the audience’s hope to see their best on-screen.
Bickram Ghosh has given the music of the film. Although he himself proclaimed that there can be no music or in Bengali “sur” for this film. He has always given excellent compositions. We are eagerly waiting for many more from him.
The official trailer is out. The unit of ‘Dhananjoy’ is now set for promotions. Although the Tollywood industry still lags behind in implementing the tricks of promotion, they are trying their best. The Bengali films are quite tricky now-a-days. Often, a promising start ends up in crude disappointment (*cough* Bastushap, *cough* Kaushik Ganguly).
We hope to see something new. We hope the people realizes the value of a life. 11th August 2017 will decide certainly.
